Head of Production at POPSUGAR

POPSUGAR Studios operates from a multi-stage studio facility in Los Angeles with in-house producers, designers, directors, crew and equipment; it has additional production operations in New York, and executes productions across the U.S., the UK and other parts of the world.

POPSUGAR Studios is looking for a talented, LA-based, Head of Production to oversee physical production and post-production of all POPSUGAR video content.




  • Oversee physical production and post-production of all POPSUGAR video content, including:

    • Social, online, streaming and linear media

    • Social, short-form, mid-form and long-form formats

    • Unscripted, documentary, switched-multi-cam, live and scripted executions

    • In-studio production, field shoots, and event coverage, across the U.S., UK and other locations


  • Lead, inspire, and nurture studio teams in production management, post-production, design, DP’s and crews.


  • Manage the Studios’ use of freelance producers, directors, DP’s, graphic designers, crews and video editors; maintain contacts with the best freelance talent, determine if/when freelancers are needed, identify the right freelancers for the job and negotiate fair but favorable terms


  • Oversee cost-estimating and budgeting for all forms of video content, expertly balancing between the needs for outstanding creative execution and fiscal discipline


  • Work with the Studio Business Operations to track/project overall production demand, match demand with production capacity and deliver the annual video demand within annual operating budgets


  • Work with producers in pre-production, production and post-production phases to review, advise and guide the physical production and post-production aspects of creative proposals, treatments and scripts


  • Work with POPSUGAR producers and creative services to assure that all video content is delivered on-time, on-budget, with stellar-quality and in conformity with POPSUGAR and client creative requirements


  • Serve as the senior production liaison to POPSUGAR’s creative services, sales and business operations units


  • Work with IT to manage Studio equipment and technology maintenance and purchases


  • Stay abreast of, and leverage, video production and post-production technology to maximize execution quality and efficiency


  • Work with the legal department to analyze rights requirements and negotiate footage and music rights as necessary


  • Ensure that productions conform to legal and business requirements, e.g. have the necessary releases, location agreements, filming permits, certificates of insurance, etc.



  • At least [10] years’ experience in video production with at least [5] years’ experience in managing video production in a scale, digital environment


  • Deep understanding of digital video production and post-production process and workflow


  • Experience with higher budget long-form series production for linear and streaming media


  • Conversant with post-production process, equipment and software, e.g. Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator


  • Conversant with or quickly able to learn project management applications like Basecamp and Workfront

  • You are a natural leader with integrity, strong organizational and prioritization skills, and industry networking skills. You are calm under pressure, speedy but not hasty, able to pay attention to detail, a tough but fair negotiator.


  • You have the ability to grasp -- at once -- both creative material and the physical and financial implications of its execution; you can size up creative IP and work with producers and talent to adeptly steer it through the budgetary, financial and physical production and post-production process.
